CFCA Zamboanga staff member Redentor Areglo’s “usual look” … taking a break while helping the dads clear the concert site. Redentor was a carpenter who worked on the construction of the original CFCA center on the Claret School grounds. Project coordinator Maribel said that Redentor would be working high above the ground on the center’s roof, and gaze on everyone going into school.
He built up the courage one day and at age 23 asked Maribel if there was a way he could return to high school. He became a CFCA scholar, entered year one of high school, got good grades and graduated four years later. Now at 29, he works double-full-time at the Centro de Roberto building and fixing everything, stays at the center, is playing a key role in the construction of the concert stage, and encourages everyone he meets with his hard working and “saving” smile. “Redentor” means “savior” in the local Mindanao language of Chabacano. “Areglo” means “fixes.” Maribel laughs and explains … “He’s a savior who fixes everything.”
When asked what message he hopes the concert and documentary convey, Redentor replies in Chabacano, “I hope people will see that there’s a small place in the world where people are creating peace within themselves and together. This is an example of peace and unity.”
